To Twit, or Post? Using Communication Technology for Good

Communications technology plays a big role in our lives today, and will continue to do so in the future. But How? And to what end? In the second of 4 part series, Aiducation connects the dots between ancient and modern trends we could harness for social development, particularly increased access to education – our passion at Aiducation.

What do Crowdfunding and an African proverb have in common?

Both turn to using communication (technology) to solve some of society’s most pressing needs, including education.

“It takes a village to raise a child” – African Proverb

For many parts of the world – and certainly in East Africa, the practice of communally raising children into productive members of society is almost as age-old as human society itself. In this practice, individuals make various material, social, spiritual and physical contributions to educate and equip younger generations with the skills they need to thrive and make their individual yet collective marks on the community’s wellbeing.

Although today’s village can no longer be defined as a place on a map, or as a list of people or organizations, its essence remains the same: it is the network of values and relationships that support and affect our lives.

Which partly explains why Crowdfunding – the practice of funding a cause by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, typically via the internet – has gained global popularity and success: the inputs of individuals in the crowd trigger the crowdfunding process and influence the ultimate value of the process outcomes. And since each individual acts as an agent by selecting and promoting the projects in which they believe in their online communities, this generates further support with a snowball effect.

The critically important and yet evolving presence of the village in our lives today is unmistakable, continuing to affect how we live together. As raising a child and crowdfunding go, communication backed by exemplary action is what count for success.

At Aiducation, we understand the importance of access to education being the strongest lever for personal development, constructive citizenship and the strongest lever for long-term social development.
