Am Mittwoch, dem 26. Februar, hatten die Mitarbeiter der Syngenta in Basel eine wunderbare Gelegenheit, Aiducation International kennen zu lernen. Der Austausch fand im Royal Auditorium statt. Nach einer Einführung, wie alles begann, präsentierte Dr. Kristin Kapitza, Syngenta-Mitarbeiterin und Gründungsmitglied von Aiducation, die Hauptaktivitäten und Erfolge. Einige Syngenta Mitarbeiter, die Aiducation International auf verschiedenste Art und Weise unterstützen, wurden von Kristin eingeladen, ihr Mitwirken zu erörtern.

Die Teilnehmer der Podiumsdiskussion, die von Monica Weiss, Quality Compliance Manager geführt wurde, warem: Tanja Lampertsdoerfer, Regulatory Database Quality Specialist, Sandra Vogel, Technical Expert Consumer Safety und Paul Castle, Communication Manager für die Syngenta Foundation für nachhaltige Agrikultur. Mit dem Publikum teilten sie ihre persönlichen Geschichten, Ihre Verbindung und Verbundenheit zu Aiducation, in welchem Rahmen sich ihr Beitrag bewegt und wie sie die Zukunft für die Organisation sehen.

Sandra erklärte: „Als ich Kristin zum ersten Mal traf, war ich auf der Suche nach einer Möglichkeit, das Glück, das ich im Leben erhalten habe, der Gesellschaft zurückzugeben. In Deutschland geboren, musste ich nie einen Gedanken daran verschwenden, wie und ob ich eine Ausbildung erhalte. Somit entschied ich mich, einen talentierten Schüler aus einer bedürftigen Familie mit einem Aiducation-Stipendium zu unterstützen“.

Paul betonte den Punkt, dass ein Engagement auch ohne monetäre Beiträge mit Aiducation möglich ist. Er führt als Beispiel George Osure von Syngenta Foundation Kenya auf, der als Gastredner Studierende an den Mentorship Academies inspiriert.

Tanja widmet Aiducation einen Teil ihrer Freizeit als freiwillige Mitarbeiterin. Ihre Hauptaufgabe besteht darin, sämtliche Bewerbungen von Studenten und Studentinnen aus Kenia und den Philippinen abzuwickeln. Die Geschichten der Aiducation Stipendien-Bewerber berühren sie sehr und einige teilt sie mit dem Publikum. Sie sagte: „Jede Bewerbung, die wir erhalten basiert auf einer anderen, persönlichen Geschichte – einige davon sind sehr traurig. Trotz allem bin ich immer wieder überwältigt, wie sehr diese Schüler und Schülerinnen – einige erst 11 oder 12 Jahre alt – sich den Schwachstellen der Gesellschaft und des Landes bewusst sind und wie sie mit ihrer Kreativität nach Lösungen suchen“.

Der Steh-Lunch bot die perfekte Plattform, um den Aiducation-Mitarbeitern weitere Fragen zu stellen und Ideen auszutauschen.

Helping school talents shape their nation‘s future

On Wednesday 26 February, Syngenta employees in Basel had the great opportunity to learn about Aiducation International. Aiducation International was founded by Syngenta employee Dr. Kristin Kapitza, EAME Regulatory Manager, together with her husband and a Kenyan friend they met at a bus stop in Kenya in 2007. The organization supports talented and needy students in developing countries through high-school scholarships. As of 2014, the initiative has extended from Kenya to the Philippines.

After an introduction on how it all started, Kristin Kapitza, founder member of Aiducatation and Syngenta employee, presented Aiducation’s main activities and achievements (see right-hand box). She then invited a number of Syngenta employees who support Aiducation International in various ways to discuss their involvement.

Monica Weiss, Quality Compliance Manager, interviewed Tanja Lampertsdoerfer, Regulatory Database Quality Specialist, Sandra Vogel, Technical Expert Consumer Safety and Paul Castle, Communication Manager of the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture. They shared their personal stories on how they are linked with Aiducation, their contribution and how they envision the future of this organization.

Sandra explained: “When I first met Kristin, I was looking for a way to bring back to society what I have received in life. For me, born in Germany, I never thought about the need to battle for education access. So I decided to support a talented but financially needy student with an Aiducation scholarship.”

Paul emphasized the fact that people can also get involved with Aiducation in non-financial ways. He cited the example of George Osure at Syngenta Foundation Kenya, who inspires students as a guest speaker at Aiducation’s Mentorship Academies.

Tanja dedicates parts of her spare time working voluntarily for Aiducation. Her main responsibility is to process all the students’ applications from Kenya and the Philippines. She is very passionate about the personal stories of Aiducation’s applicants for scholarships, and shared some of them with the audience. She said: “Each application we receive is based on different stories, some sad ones as well. However, I am always amazed to discover how those students – some of them really young, just 11 or 12 – are fully aware of the pain points in their communities, and how creative they are in finding solutions for them”.

Participants then took the opportunity to raise additional questions and share ideas with the Aiducation volunteers over a snack lunch.
