An incredible experience for our AiduFellows

Posted on 05/06/2012 at 01:20PM

End of April this year’s first Mentorship Academy took place in Malindi, Kenya. The second academy this year is scheduled for November. As always this get-together was one of the highlights of the academic year. AiduFellows from across all participating schools meet up for several days of inspiration, exchange and learning. Next to a wide range of inspirational speakers from various backgrounds, like as one of the highlights Tom Mboya junior, son of a famous Kenyan politician, the scholars also got hands on career advice and public speaking training. Another great experience were the excursion to big Kenyan enterprises like the Malindi salt works or the Baricho water plant.

We used the chance and interviewed several AiduFellows and AiduAlumni, letting them tell their story, share their experiences and find out what impact the scholarship had on their life. You can find them on our youtube channel here

Aiducation has entered the student world!

During the AIESEC Career Days (job fair) at the University of Zürich this past Wednesday, various Aiducators were given the unique opportunity to reach out to a wide array of students and discuss and share opinions with them. Our bright green stand attracted many from very diverse faculties. The poster explaining our business model and the scholarship applications of visionary and inspired future Aidufellows we had laid out prompted a lot of discussion and sparked much interest.

An additional draw to our stand (besides the fact that we were the only Non-Profit organization present), was that we organized a contest. Thanks to the generosity of DeanDeal.ch we were able to offer some very cool vouchers to the winners. Our question was how many students were provided scholarships in 2011 alone. The three winners picked came closest to guessing the correct amount of scholarships awarded last year, which was 143.

The impact of our work - as real as it gets

Posted on 04/25/2012 at 03:20AM

Working for and supporting a Not for Profit Organisation can at times raise questions and doubts about the actual impact and benefit of the work and money invested. We too know such questions, especially because creating sustainable impact is right at the core of Aiducation’s mission and we work hard to ensure that we can achieve this goal. This is why we are very happy to share this letter with you from one of our AiduFellows, Zubeda, who just recently got awarded a scholarship.

Read in her own words how getting the chance to go back to school had an enormous impact on her life an gave her back hope. It is extremely motivating to see the real impact of what we do and we want to thank all our supporters enabling us to make this happen.

Aiducation is on the right path

During an interim year at university, a friend of Aiducation, Annet Röst met with founders of Aiducation International Florian Kapitza and Jeremy Kambi. The invitation to visit Jeremy in Kenya came just at the right moment for the enthusiastic traveler. After a short stint at a local bakery to earn some extra income, she spent three weeks on site in Kenya getting to know the organization.

Annet with some of our AiduFellows

We asked her about her experience and were happy to hear that many Kenyans think our concept is the right one.

What was your first impression of Aiducation International in Kenya?
Annet: From the first encounter with our Kenyan chapter, I felt, that everybody there was completely committed to the cause of Aiducation International. They work incredibly hard to reach the goals we set ourselves as an organization.

Who did you see in action?
Annet: The work there is done by locals. I found this to be a key point, since an organization like Aiducation International must be firmly rooted in the local population to be able to be effective. After all, Kenyans can probably most easily determine what kind of help they need and how best to proceed.

You also visited some of the schools our AiduFellows attend.
Annet: Right, and those were probably my most memorable moments in Kenya. It was really touching to see how our work for Aiducation International can turn around a student’s life. I even had the opportunity to speak with a few of “our” students. While they seemed reserved and a little bit shy at the beginning, I was impressed how thoughtful their answers were.

What surprised you most?
Annet: Probably the cultural differences between Kenyan and western European culture. There are slight differences, for example when it comes to making project plans. It was fascinating to be able to witness this and experience the Kenyan approach and see how both ways can lead towards the same goal. I was also astonished to find that computers are not as widespread as I‘d assumed.

Anything you brought home from Kenya?
Annet: I returned home with the total conviction that Aiducation International has chosen the right path. During my trip I often spoke with people and told them about the concept of Aiducation International. People were extremely enthusiastic about our concept and agreed that the focus on helping young people to education is the right thing to do. In any case, I returned to Switzerland fully motivated.

Was waren Deine ersten Eindrücke von Aiducation International in Kenia?
